MORE LIGHTS WANTED

KAPITI ISLAND Press Association. WELLINGTON, Thursday. A deputation from the Merchant Service Guild waited on the Hon. G. J. Anderson. Minister of Marine, and asked that additional lights be placed on the north-west point of Kapiti Island, and at the entrance to the channel. The Minister will consider the request. WAIMARIE’S END.— Too old for further service, the steamer Waimarie, one of the best known and most popular units of the Northern Company's fleet a few years back, is spending her last days in the Waihou Fiiver, her keel fast in the mud near the company’s wharf at Paeroa The Waimarie was built at Auckland by Mr. R. Logan, sen., specially for the Paeroa cargo and passenger trade, which she entered in 1596. For nearly SO years she had a successful career, i n occasions carrying as many as 80 passengers, for in those days the trade was much busier than it is to-day. u’he was the first of the white funnelers to be lighted by electricity. Some five years ago the Waimarie was replaced by the Taniwha, which also came from Auckland yards, and since thj?n has remained, idle. Built of kauri throughout, the old trader has worn well, to-day she -looks sadly in need of the paint brush.
