SCHOOL LOSS BY FIRE
DEPARTMENT’S STAND “OPEN TO ABUSE” Replacement bf books and equipment destroyed in the fire at Whakatane School has been refused by the Education Department. The reason advanced is that “the department would be compelled to make a grant in every case where committees suffered loss and such matters would be open to abuse.” The Auckland Education Board considered the statement yesterday. The chairman, Mr. A. Burns, said that the fire had been a big loss to the school. The board might make a grant from the school committees’ funds. It was sheer misfortune that the library had been burnt. Mr. W. S. King: Surely the department may leave the board to see that there is no abuse. Mr. R. Hoe: What is the suggestion about abuse? The chairman: 1 don’t know, unless they think schools might be set fire to. Mr. (Snell: The department should make up the damage in fires like this. The chairman: It would hold that the committee should have insured the library. We haven't a hope of getting anything from the department and so we should make a grant of £l5O to the school. The suggestion was adopted.
