AUCKLAND CRIME

“Nothing to Fear,” States Judge of the Supreme Court COMPLIMENT TO POLICE WORK IF those responsible for the investigation of crime are supported intelligently and sympathetically from the proper quarters there will be little to fear,” stated His Honour Mr. Justice Herdman, at the Supreme Court this morning.

“Crime is said to be prevalent in Auckland,’ said his Honour, addressing tie prisoners. “You have helped materially to create that belief; the operations of dangerous criminals would soon establish such an impression.

“Considering the extent of the Aucldand Police District, extending as it does from the North Cape to Mercer, and from sea to sea, I don’t think that there is anything to be alarmed about Housebreaking has been prevalent lately, but that is only a passing circumstance. If those respon-

sible for the investigation of crime are supported intelligently aud sympathetically from the proper quarters, there will be little to fear. In the present case,” concluded his Honour, “the police deserve to be complimented upon their success in bringing the present offenders to justice.” JN view of the statements recently made by Commissioner Mcllveney regarding Auckland’s “crime wave,” the complimentary reference to the work of the Auckland police, made by His Honour in sentencing prisoners charged with house breaking, contains more than passing interest.
