Rain Extinguishes Bush Fire.—The bush fire that threatened the township of Balnarri.ng, Victoria, was extinguished by heavy rain.—A. and N.Z. Honolulu Cloudburst. A message from Honolulu says there was a cloudburst in the south-eastern districts of Honolulu to-day. Houses were undermined and livestock drowned, and damage was done to the rice fields. — A. and N.Z. Leprous Rat.—A rat infected with leprosy was discovered in Sydney yesterday. The health authorities say there is no cause for alarm, as many doctors are inclined to regard rat leprosy and human leprosy as two distinct diseases.— A. and N.Z. Auckland’s Soup Kitchen.— Auckland’s soup kitchen, the inspiration of the Rev. Jasper Calder and his Big Sisters, is being freely availed of. Over 200 people daily are obtaining soup from it. One man one day this w eek came back three times for supplies. Bequest to Hospital.—The will of the late Mrs. Margaret Fotheringham, aged SO, who died in Auckland on Sunday, Provides the sum of £IOO for a cot in the Princess Mary’s children’s w’ard at the Auckland Hospital. The residue °f the estate, amounting to £I,OOO, is bequeathed to the Presbyterian Orphanage, Remuera. Mount Eden Rates.—Ratepayers of Mount Eden will have an extra penny *n the pound to pay. The Borough Council has decided to increase the rate to 3s Bd, which will produce an additional £1,200. This year the hospital levy has increased from £ 3.057 10 £5,310, and the Drainage Board levy to 2Jd in the pound. The bor--o,Jgh has also carried out extensive Permanent works during the year.
