FEELING RUNS HIGH IN SOUTH AFRICA
FLAG BILL PASSED PROTEST DEMONSTRATIONS By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright CAPETOWN, Monday. The House of Assembly to-day passed the Government’s South African National Flag Bill d. a majority of 21 votes.
The Leader of the Opposition, General Smuts, vigorously opposed the introduction of the measure on the ground that it would reopen all the racial bitterness of the past and imperil the progress which already had been made toward amity. The member for ~ i c ...... Zululand also enera m strongly appealed to the Government to delay the Bill with a view to settling the flag question by agreement. A crowded meeting at the Capetown Town Hall adopted a resolution against the passing of the Bill. There was also a remarkable demonstration in front of the Durban Town Hall. The Union Jack was unfurled and dedicated in the presence of 10,000 people. The Flag Bill was characterised as a violation of Christian principles. Both gatherings w-ere marked by much enthusiasm. —A. and N.Z.
