Irish Stew and the Power Board
Lease of a Cooking, Establishment Solicitor Blamed The sweet savour of Irish stew does not appeal to the members of the Waitemata Power Board when it greets their nostrils on a meeting-morning. “There was that smell of Irish stew again this morning.” said a member as soon as the board was assembled today. “The present cooking business cannot be allowed to be carried on in these premises,” said the chairman, Mr. J. W. Hayden. “Instructions have been given to the solicitor.” A Member: But it is still going on. Mr. J. Trevithick said that there was an unfortunate position. The lease of the premises had not been signed, but the shop had been sub-let to a woman who had gone to a lot of expense. “The man actually cannot make a business here, but he has put a woman into it,” said the speaker. The Chairman: The board's solicitor must get us out of the hole as he got us into it, owing to the delay in the signing of the lease. Mr. R. E. Thompson: There is sufficient evidence now to constitute a lease. “But in the meantime the nuisance is still going on,” said Mr. S. E. KenningHft “The solicitor is the man we want to stir up!”
