HE CAROLLED TO THE CONSTABLE
UNWANTED COMPANION FINED FOR OBSTRUCTION (.From Our Resident Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, To-day. Just why a well-dressed and ostensibly respectable man should have fallen into step alongside a constable on his beat in the city on Saturday, and greeted him with, “How are you doing, Joe?” was not satisfactorily explained in the court to-day, when a man, whose name was ultimately suppressed, was charged with obstructing the constable in the execution of hi 3 duty. There was no physical obstruction alleged; but the constable considered, when the intruder walked with him and finally sang to him as they walked, that the time to arrest his uninvited companion had arrived. Mr. Treadwell, for the accused, said he was thoroughly ashamed. He had had a few drinks, which were solely responsible for his strange action. The magistrate (Mr. E. Page): It seems a stupid offence rather than a criminal one. Fined £l.
