VALUABLE BEQUEST
ORIENTAL COLLECTION AUCKLAND MUSEUM GIFTS r pHE Auckland Museum has received a valuable bequest from the estate of the late Mr. Reg. Shaw. A collection of 126 valuable specimens. including Satsuma ware, porcelain and brass, has been received by the curator (Mr. Gilbert Archey). Exquisitely carved also are some of the ivory figures. The Shaw exhibits will considerably enhance the value of the Oriental collection at the Museum. Mr. Archey is particularly gratified with the gift. Other recent gifts to the museum include: Mr. George Graham, well-known Auckland collector: Stone used as a miri, or a ra.sp. Found at Weiti Heads. Mr. A. A. Troup: Chinese figures carved from part of tree root; also old newspapers. Mr. Barrett, Onehunga: Ancient sinker found on Motu-tapu Island. Dr. Peter Buck: Teka and pua from Cook Islands. Miss A. Wilson, Green Lane: Valuable collection of carved bone implements, including fish-hooks, and a hair-comb, found at Paratutai, near Manukau Heads, quite recently. Mr. Simms, Mount Eden: Stone mere. Mr. H. E. Vaile: Valuable Maori cloak, decorated with pigeon feathers. Miss L. M. Browne, Onehunga: Coco-nut scraping stool from Tikopia, Solomon Islands, interesting because of the fact that at Tikopia is a Polynesian colony in Melanesian territory. Mr. T. W. Downes, Wanganui (per Dr. Buck): Excellent specimen of native fish basket, peculiar to Wanganui Maoris. Mr. A. T. Pyecroft, Auckland: Three paddtes from Manurewa; also pistol and Turkish bayonets from Suvla Bay.
