Cambridge Competitions. Cambridge Competitions Society (inc.) has resolved to hold its annual festival in October, commencing October 3, and extending over five days.
Church Asks For Disarmament*—At a meeting of the Congregational Union in London a resolution was adopted asking the Government to lead in decreasing armaments, and to accept the principle of international arbitration. — A. and N.Z.—Sun.
Rotarian Thought. —Mr. Vivian Carter, General Secretary of the British Rotary Clubs, speaking at a luncheon In London, said the international meet ing of Rotary at Ostend in June would attempt to standardise Rotarian thought, dealing with peace, industry, business and civic life.—A. and N.Z.— Sun.
Police Methods Criticised.—The way in which statements were obtained by the police from accused persons was criticised by Mr. R. Singer in a Supreme Court case yesterday. Counsel said that methods used here were forbidden in England, but his Honour ilr. Justice Stringer disagreed. “A preliminary remark of warning must be made to the accused person,” declared the barrister.
Motorists Fined. —A collision between a motor-car driven by Miss Adelaide Alice Brown and a motor-van driven by J. H. Voysey was the cause of the two drivers appearing in court at Cambridge on Thursday morning, before Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., both being charged with negligent driving. Both were convicted, Miss Brown being fined 40s and costs and Voysey £5 Is and costs. An appeal will probably be made in the case of Voysey.
Cambridge Traffic. —A review of the Past year’s operations on the Cam-bfidge-Hamilton railways show that although the goods traffic, both inward and outward, shows an increase, the Passenger traffic for the 12 months Prior to March 31 last shows a decrease °f nearly 25 per cent. This is due, Without doubt, to motor vehicle compehtion. The motor service occupies olll y about half the time of the train journey.
Cambridge Library.—At the annual •’Uceting of Cambridge Library the °Uowing officers were elected: ComMessrs. H. D. Dullimore (chairg. G. L. Taylor, H. Allan Bell. * James, Frank Penn, E. B. Kernsey> E. B. Hiilam. H. W. Blackburne The annual report showed f. ere were IS3 subscribers to the ra ry. Some 217 new books had been Purchased during the year. The bai-lee-sheet showed a credit balance in of £25 7s sd.
