OVERLADEN LORRIES
CHECK ON LOADS USE OF LOAD-O-METERS (From Onr Own Coi’resjjondent.') PALMERSTON N., Thursday. Where weighbridges are not installed county councils are ever faced with difficulty in determining the weight of the loads carried by motorlorries using their roads. The Manawatu County Council has for some time past endeavoured to interest adjoining county councils in the matter with a view to sharing the cost of a set of load-o-meters. These articles, which are an American patent, are easily transported from point to point as desired, and when placed under the wheels of the vehicles register the weight of the lorry or car and its contents. The cost being some £l3O, however, prevented the council from purchasing a set for its own use, hence the desire for the neighoouring bodies to co-operate. The request for support did not receive the desired result and the Public Works Department was then approached with a view to securing the loan of a set of load-o-meters. Again they were fated to meet -with disappointment, for the department was unable to comply with the request meantime. It was pointed out that any fines collected as the result of the commitment c breaches of the regulation in respect to overloading did not pass into the coffers of the county, but in> • a consolidated fund, but with a view to protecting its own roads the council decided to again approach the 0.-.er county councils in an endeavour to urge upon the Main Highways Board the necessity for the installation of iiie /? that body to make the purchase.
