“GET THE POLICE!”
AN UNWANTED VISITOR FINED £1 FOR ASSAULT Dennis Doak would not take “No” for an answer. He wanted to see a lodger at Mrs. Weaver's boarding-house in Hobson Street. The man was out, and Mrs. Weaver, for reasons of her own, having decreed that visitors must not go into the bedrooms, requested him to wait outside. Now Dennis Doak comes from Ireland, and he resented the good lady’s request. He went away, but came back a little while later and tried once more to gain admission. Mrs. Weaver shut the door in his face this time, so he tried to force his way in. Mrs. Weaver was holding the door, when Doak caught her arm, and twisted it to make her let go. “I told him I’d get the police,” said Mrs. Weaver in the Police Court this morning. “He was very insolent and defiant. He said ‘Get the police, and I’ll wait here till you do!’” “What does he do?” asked the magistrate, when Mrs. Weaver had told her story.
‘ From what we can gather, he’s a cadger,” Senior-Sergeant Edwards told him. “He’s been cadging money off the boarder, I understand.” £l, or seven days, with an additional £1 for witnesses’ expenses, was the penalty. Doak wanted until May 31 to pay, but was told he could send out and get the money.
