Expansion of Technical Education
INCREASED ENROLMENTS ACCOMMODATION PROBLEM (From Our Resident Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Speaking to-day at the annual conference of the Technical School Teachers’ Association on the growth of technical education in the Dominion during the past years, the Minister of Education, the Hon. R. A. Wright, said that the enrolment had increased in the four main centres from 5,017 in 1921 to 6,734 in 1926.
Enrolment in technical high schools had increased by over 67 per cent. Government payments, apart from grants for buildings and equipment, increased from over £143,000 to approximately £184,000. Expenditure on new buildings and equipment had averaged some £40,000 per annum in the four main centres.
The problem of accommodation is becoming acute, said Mr. Wright. Financially amalgamation might result in a reduction of working expenses, but so far it had not been the experience of the department.
