CRIBBING POSITIONS
Some jockeys have got 0* knack of cribbing positions «> the barrier down to a fine If the starter is easy i n thi. respect, can the boys r* blamed ? Yet is it not part o' the starter’s duty to see that the horses are in their pronJ places? At Te Rapa there scarcely a race in which tfo draw was adhered to. Whether this assisted horses in their attempts to win can only h? conjectured. In one event, the flrat, rider drew number 17, and he actually went off from aboiten. The same combination ob Wednesday drew 23, and when lining up went straight ini the middle of the field, and not more than a dozen horses out from the rails. This horse won the first da and was second on Wednesday. It was materially assisted to win, but on the second day was probably hampered by being in the middle of a bir bunch. If this is allowed to go on why not abolish the box and marbles altogether? If tb starter cannot be depended upon to watch the horses and their positions, then the stipecdiaries should take action.
