A HEAVY CARD
PROSPECTS DISCUSSED
The handicapper has set backers a fairly difficult task in sorting - out the ultimate dividend payers, but several of those engaged have been racing prominently during the last two months, and their form should be a sound guide. On the other hand, there are a number who have not been in the public eye for some time past, and this contingent will add to the difficulty of solving the problem presented. As usual Auckland is strongly represented and the more forward of the Epsom and Mangere trained representatives will have a good following from this part at all events. When the announcement bell begins to peal forth the public will be reminded that the contestants are being mustered for the first event on the card.
Twenty-one figure in this event, which is confined to the trotting brigade, and nine appear on the limit, of which perhaps Lochade may call for most attention. Paradigm was succeptible of improvement at Thames and will probably turn the tables on Mollie Park, who beat him by a length. Ohapi and Roez are nicely placed, and the latter will be well supported. Roe’s mare is overdue, but she should be able to show up in this field. Real Todd should be a real hnrsp in snr»h
company, and he will probably be the public fancy. Colonel Thorpe has enough pace to beat the band if he would go level, but In view of his recent displays he will not be backed too confidently. Real Todd may experience most opposition from Roez and Paradigm. With the initial event out of the way the big field carded will commence their parade for the LEAMINGTON HANDICAP Is miles; limit 3.43
The race book shows that twentyone is again the main. Charming Pronto who was omitted from the published lists, being in his allotted pac 12 vards behind. Fifteen, a big held in itself, will commence from the limit and here anything is likely ' to happem Araroa. Andover and Golden Grattan look the pick of the front rankers and will carry a large number of invest ments. Araroa was improving at Hawera and should improve on his showing there. Golden Grattan was expected at the Thames, but did not perform up to expectations "ill perhaps make amends to-morrow. Charming Pronto was in the picture at Thames, and if he has improved in the interval will be a tough nut to crack. Signor has been out of action some time, but Ansel Bell is due o break it for a win. The trotter Bluewood. tough though he may be, will find he is up against it, but Lola Reklaw will be one of the hardest to beat and Charming Pronto and Araroa may beat her to the line. Interest will next be centred in the seventeen who have paid up for the principal event of the day, the CAMBRIDGE TROTTING CUP HANDICAP
A good scrutiny of the lot engaged gives much food for thought in the Cup contest. There are several present who have interesting performances over the two mile journey, while not a few hold promising credentials. Of those who leave the front line Grattan Thorpe will not be without friends, but Bingen King should hold the son of Our Thorpe and the rest of the limit contingent safe. If Groat’s charge has effected any improvement since his Hawke’s Bay and Poverty Bay Cup essays, he will be the hardest is dispose of. Festive Moon, on paper, looks the goods, but the freelegged pacer has not raced since the Otahuhu spring fixture, but if she can reproduce that go, she should just about win. However there is a. doubt about her being ready for the journey, and the Great Audubon mare may be reserved for the shorter heat. Scandal is mentioned as likely to upset calculations, while Master Councillor can be depended upon to run his usual consistent race. Next comes three speed merchants, Rock Hinton, Respect and Nelson Tasker, but the latter has to prove his ability to stay. The other pair should be well placed when it comes to the final effort and it will take a solid one to stop them. Lord Nepean and Lady Dunmore promise to be in the picture, while that good horse, Goldman, must not be overlooked, and will beat more than will beat him. Doctor Dillon will be handy and if there is any delay in front the Doctor will be after the fee at the finish. In a good contest Rock Hinton, Respect, Festive Moon (if started) and Bingen King should dispute the issue. The race and presentation of the handsome trophy W'hich accompanies the stake, now over, backers will endeavour to seelct the possibilities in the
Provided all go to the post, the public will have twenty-three from which to make a selection in this event, a round dozen being on the end. If Golden Grattan makes any showing in her previous attempt, she will have further support, but both Black Ballin and Silver Link are nicely placed and should account for those in front of them. Gaza will be a popular fancy, despite recent failures, and the son of Our Thorpe may go much better than when away from home. Dealer was coming on at Hawera and should be handy when it comes to the settling point. Lola Reklaw is also in this field, but may elect to chase the Stewards’ Handicap later in the afternoon, while Tui Zolock, who is in the pink of condition will keep the rest moving. Black Ballin, Gaza and Silver Link should have a good set-to. The next interesting feature of the afternoon’s sport, and a popular event too, is the

Here we find twenty-two candidates showing preference for the weight on top, and from the eight off the end of the handicap, Aggie Bell, Beatty and Our Pirate are entitled to respect, the latter having perhaps more pretentions to saddle ability. Moko Pete is going well, but will strike a snag in High Sea, whose win at Hawera was full of merit, and makes his prospects in the race under review very bright. Uncle Bert has shown a partiality for this style of locomotion and won the President’s at Cambridge last year. Taipare will be troublesome to the field and will be one of the fancied division when the machine closes. Amaris will require a race or two to sharpen him up, while Liberate can scamper a solid mile with the weight up. High Sea and Taipare should fight out a good duel, with Our Pirate most dangerous of the others.
The square-gaited exponents, who are capable of tramping a solid two miles in pretty slick time, will have their opportunity in the
Sixteen names are left on the list for this heat, and they include those of some well-known and well-performed unhoppled performers. Roma Bingen and Tiki should prove the most dangerous of the limit quintette, while Floraline will perhaps account for them; while in turn Anseline threatens to silence the Florizel gelding. wtp n i T i* U +v al e 18 a flne tr °tter and while V’J the flrine line at the finish, while Peterson will have a large following.
