MYSTERY BRIDGE
WAITITI VIADUCT LIGHT ON THE PROBLEM GIRDERS AT NEWMARKET A theory to account for the presence at Newmarket railway yards of iron plates and girders marked "Waititi Viaduct” is that they were intended for the Waititi Viaduct, two miles south of Te Kuiti. A former Te Kuiti resident explains that the original proposal, when the bridge was built, was to run light engines between Taumarunui and Te Kuiti. This idea was dropped, and to bear the heavy engines the bridge had to be strengthened. ORDERED TWICE OVER H.e believes that material for the strengthening was ordered twice over, the surplus being sent to Newmarket, where it has remained since. The omission which permitted the material to remain at Newmarket recalls other classic instances of official confusion.
Of the Te Kuiti and Ngaruawahia post offices it has been said that the plans got mixed, so that at Ngaruawahia was built the relatively imposing structure originally meant for Te Kuiti. More recently another centre in the Auckland Province is alleged to have accidentally obtained a much finer post office than was* designed for it.
