ONEHUNGA’S JUBILEE
TO BE CELEBRATED NEXT WEDNESDAY Much comment has followed THE SUN'S reference to the failure of Onehunga Borough to take steps to celebrate its jubilee, and as soon as the new council assumed office the project was viewed in its true light. Headed by the new mayor, Mr. W. Coldicutt, the councillors and citizens hav£ now decided that the celebration shall be held on Wednesday next. A thoroughly representative committee is engaged in the arrangement of a varied and interesting programme. This will commence with the formal introduction to office of the new mayor, ir. ‘.he council chambers, at 1.30 p.m. after which there will be a procession to the Foresters’ Theatre, headed by the Citizens’ Band. Here a gathering of old residents will be addressed by Dr. W. G! Scott, one of the old surviving ex-mayors. Following afternoon tea, the old folks will be entertained and driven home in motor-cars. In the evening ladies and children are to be entertained at a picture entertainment kindly provided by Mr. Wesley Martin. The old settlers will be attracted at a smoke concert in the Orphans’ Hall, and a variety of other enjoyable items are under consideration. Mr. J. W. Waller, aged 89 years, is the oldest surviving Mayor of Onehunga and he is at present residing at Takapuna. Mr. J. D. Jackson was the first mayor of the borough, and it was to him that the proclamation of the district being gazetted as a borough was sent by his Excelelncy the Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the Colony I of Xew Zealand and its Dependencies ! (the Marquis of Xormanby) was ! directed on April IS, 1877.
