TROTTING

NOTES AND COMMENTS

BY

ABAYDOS

Failed Before Royalty The handsome grey mare, Queen's General, who made a special trip from Westport to assist in entertaining Royalty at Christchurch during the meeting held in honour of the Ducal visit, did not return to the Golden Coast. Saddled up in a mile heat, and also saddled with the weight of investments, the speedy grey, who is usually a quick beginner, failed to strike her straps at the start, and was soon lost in the crowd. Bennett sold the daughter of King’s General the following day and Queenie remained in Christchurch. Capable of Better Things Queen’s General, however is capable of doing things, and it is probable that being her first Metropolitan appearance, and making her debut in select society, the mare was unnerved, hence her failure. The grey mare is on the end of a mile saddle dash at Forbury Park next week, and if she goes to the post, dressed in her Sunday best, there will be very few in the Beach Handicap that will have anything on Queenie for speed. Ready for the Fight Fight Ever, the Australian bred roan gelding, who gave the public a taste of his real qualities in a two mile secondary class handicap at Addington recently, figures on the end of the Prince of Wales Handicap at Dunedin. The company in this event is pretty select, but Fight Ever will be ready for the fray, and can be depended upon to put up a ding dong fight.

Trampfast Joins Society Trampfast, whose performances at I-lawera recently were full of merit and stamped the trotter as full of stamina and pep, will tackle the high class free legged fraternity in the two mile harness event at Forbury Park. Handicapped to tramp the journey in 4.42 the son of Logan Pointer will demonstrate to the opposition that he is capable of tramping at even a faster gait. At Hawera Lowe’s trotter had a record of a first, second, and two thirds out of four starts, all over sixteen furlongs, his times ranging from 4.42 to 4.44. Escapade’s Next Escapade The trotting Queen, Escapade, who during the Easter holidays attracted considerable attention by her record breaking escapade when she won the big two mile handicap in 4.27 1-5 at Addington, is among the entrants for the Prince of Wales Handicap at Dunedin; and in being placed on a 4.28 mark, the daughter of Nelson Bingen—Country Belle must be considered to have a rosy prospect of once again putting the pacers in the background. Meritorious Meritor

The Great Audubon gelding Meritor, who has been putting up some attractive performances on the rugged West Coast of the South Island, appears among the field in the Domain Handicap at Dunedin next week, and is on the end of a 3.57 mile and five furlongs heat, equal to. 2.26 to the mile. If Jim Jarden takes the sturdy pacer South, he will make many friends by his fine bold style of locomotion. Sebisca for Forbury The Auckland trotter Sebisca is still in the South, and, may be a starter at the Forbury Park meeting next week. The old mare is on a 4*47 mark, but her recent form was not suggestive of an early victory. However she may have got over her slight troubles which affected her prospects at Addington, in which case Sebisca will let the remainder of the field know they have been to the races.

A Young Author Dillon The promising Author Dillon representing Author Jinks, claims a couple of engagements at Dunedin, and the three-year-old will have a good following, as in his recent essays, he has been in the money, and his turn cannot be far off now. Young Author is on a 2.15 peg in both the saddle and harness eight furlong flutters, and he should have a good chance of breaking it for a first certificate in the harness heat.

A Tough Proposition Blue Thorpe is a square gaited customer that gives a lot of cheek when properly wound up, and his turn may come at Forbury Park next week. Although in a fairly hard school, Blue Thorpe is a hard head and some of those further back in the handicap will find it a hard job to top him off. In his last effort, at Thames, the grey son of Lord Althorpe cleaned up a field of pacers in a mile saddle cutting out the journey at a 2.16 clip. Generally in the Money

Lochree, who annexed the mile flutter at Ashburton last week-end, is on a 2.16 peg in the saddle dash at Dunedin and there is no reason why the Great Audubon gelding should not make matters very interesting for his opponents. Although only a three-year-old Lochree has seldom failed to get in the money in his nine starts this season. No Fear Frightens Opposition A winner at Reef ton last Wednesday was No Fear, a three-year-old pacing gelding from a mare named Ma Cushla, and claiming the great Author Dillon as his sire. No Fear did not experience much difficulty in settling the opposition and he soon frightened the opposition. The gelding’s next appearance on a trotting track will probably be at Forbury Park. Another Young Author Dillon Achray, a three-year-old son of Author Dillon and Bellena, who is trained at Greymouth by Jim Jarden, has been accorded a nomination at Dunedin. Achray is a very promising pacer, and made a good impression, when he won the Guinness Handicap at the Grey New Year meeting. The son of Author Dillon was handicapped in the twelve and a half furlongs, on a 2.31 mark, but won nicely in time that equalled a 2.24 gait. He is on a 2.23 mark at the Southern fixture.

A Good Asset Asset, a sturdy, stocky filly by Harold Dillon from Petrova, who has shown such promising form in her few public essays, figures at the end of the mile and five furlong event at Forbury next week. At Westport last Boxing Day, Asset, off a 3.48 mark won the twelve furlong heat very comfortably in 3.43 and the following day from a 2.26 mark, was second in a mile heat, registering 2.23 3-5. Recently at Hororata, the filly silenced a two-mile field, tramping the journey in 4.52. There should be an excess of assets over liabilities for the youngster’s connections at Dunedin.

Returning to Form The many sporting friends throughout the Dominion of Mr. H. Brinkman, the veteran trotting handicapper, will be pleased to learn that he is making a very satisfactory recovery from his recent lengthy illness. Mr. Brinkman has high hopes of being able to parti-

cipate in the Forbury Park meeting next week, and if able to make the trip, the genial adjustor will receive the hearty congratulations of the sporting fraternity on his return to form.
