CUP TO ASSURANCE

SOUTH CANTERBURY EVENTS REVIEW OF RACING (.Special to THE SUN.) TIMARU. Friday. The South Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting was opened in cold and showery weather. The course was soft, and the attendance fair. There was a drop of £5,850 in the totalisator returns. After the Rosewill Handicap the stewards held an inquiry into the riding of Waterlow, and after hearing evidence decided to disqualify the owner, F. R. Pearce, for 12 months, for giving unsatisfactory evidence, and the rider, D. Hall, was suspended for six months for not riding the mare out. Hurdles to Kaikahu The Tekapo Hurdles was an evenbetting race, five of the eight candidates being liberally supported. A-fter Goldtown had made the running for half a mile, Bonatic shot to the front. At the end of six furlongs Kaikahu took charge, with Dubious, Oriflamb, Boiiatic, and GoldtoWn just behind him. Turning for home, Kaikahu was going well in front, with Dubious, Oriflamb, Bonatic going best of the others. With the final hurdle disposed of, Bonatic made a dash, and joined Kaikahu and Dubious, but Kaikahu held him safe, and won by two lengths from Bonatic, who beat Dubious by a length. Oriflamb, who led in the straight, was the next to finish. Coastguard fell at the second fence after being ridden a waiting race.

The Favourite Fails Shandre did not enjoy a good passage entering the straight in the Gladstone Hack Handicap, and failed to reach the money. He looked well. The winner, Happy Queen, was among the quickest to begin, but was ridden a patient race till nearing the bend for home, where she came on, to win very easily from Brightling. Real Glad was in charge for two furlongs, where she was displaced by Ascetic, who was last to leave the barrier. When half the journey was covered, Princess Mafalda ran to the head of affairs. Ascetic was hopelessly beaten three furlongs from home, but Real Glad battled on, to secure third money. Green Cloth was always well placed, and she finished wide out, being only a head in front of Shandre for fourth place.

A Useful Filly After All Colours had made the pace in the Electric Stakes for four furlongs, he dropped right back. Up to that stage he had been closely followed by Card Trick, Solgele, and Gay Sonnet, and then came Master John. Solgele was first in line for home, with Card Trick and Gay Sonnet handy. At the distance Gay Sonnet got the front, but Royal Tractor then came throufh, and after a sharp tussle he beat Gay Sonnet a head. Three lengths away c * Card Trick, then Solgele, Master „ohn, and Chivalry. While concluding her preliminary, Sax Airini tried to jump a fence, and sustained severe injuries to her shoulder, causing her withdrawal from the race. Gay Sonnet is a useful filly, and should win races at country fixtures. Assurance Wins Cup Dr. M. G. Louisson’s Assurance squeezed home from the favourite Biblo in the Timaru Cup. He was second to last going out of the straight, but moved up to the leaders two furlongs from home. He stuck to his task in the straight, and won in pleasing style. It is evident that Assurance appreciates the sting out of the ground, for under similar conditions he performed creditably at Trentham. Mountain Lion was carried out very wide going out of the straight, and this spoilt any chance he might have had. Biblo was always handily placed, but he covered a bit of unnecessary ground, otherwise he had every chance. He got to the front at the distance, where Assurance and Baldowa tackled him, Assurance out-staying him, to win by a head. Baldowa had to make his effort on the outside of four horses at the turn, but he battled on gamely to fill third place. Ophir took charge half a mile from home, but was beaten at the distance post. Fresco, Gay Queen, and Tholornon were well down the course. Hot Favourite Scores

A hot favourite in Receipt got home in the Smithfield Handicap from the fast-finishing Overhaul, but it was a great tussle. After Dancing Days and Eaton Bells had made the early running,- Receipt, Volant, Rob, and Eaton Bells engaged in a desperate fight for supremacy. While the quartette was thus heavily engaged, Overhaul came from the back, and looked as if he would smother them, but Receipt succeeded in being first to reach the line, having her head in front of Overhaul, while a similar distance away was Eaton Bells, who was a neck in front of Volant, and a head further away came Rob. Over a sevenfurlong jgurney Overhaul will be very hard to beat. Booster was never prominent, neither was Nine of Spades. Serotina was handily placed two furlongs from home, but stopped badly in the straight. A Poor Field Of the five competitors for the Otipua Steeplechase, Palencia and Frisco Mail ran off at the first fence, and Glument lost his rider at the fifth obstacle. From there on Adjutor and Night Raid raced in close order till the last fence was negotiated, where Adjutor drew away from his opponent, and won by three lengths. Frisco Mail, who completed the course, filled third place. Peho Scores Decisively After being badly placed for three furlongs, Peho drew to the front at the turn for home, and went on to win the Rosewill Hack Handicap tv four lengths from Moratorium, who, fiardridden, stayed on best of the others, to gain second money. The favourite, Lucy Locket, was on the outside of a bunch, being just behind the leader for five furlongs, where she was beaten. Solzia, Flaming Ray, and Hoylake were all well enough placed in the middle stages of the race, but were unable to improve their positions. The Harp Makes Good

Courtly Rose failed to get away when the barrier was released for the Doncaster Handicap, for which Thorndale was a substantial favourite. In the early stages Sweet Melody, then Fairy Herald, made the pace, with The Harp and Thorndale handy. At the turn for home Sweet Melody was beaten, and Fairy Herald showed the way to The Harp and Thorndale. At the distance The Harp shot to the front, and went on to win rather easily from Fairy Herald, who beat Thorndale by three lengths for second money. A long way back came Tarleton. Jones was hard at Thorndale in the straight, but despite his best efforts the gelding was stopping over the last 50 yards.
