DIAMOND WEDDING
MR. AND MRS. W. HOGG To-day at their residence, 17 Bassett Road, Remuera, Mr. and Mrs. William Hogg will celebrate the 60th anniversary of their wedding, which occurs to-morrow, but, owing to the illness of Hr. Hogg, the celebrations will be of a quiet nature. Born in 1840 at Market Hill, County Armagh. Ireland, Mr. Hogg arrived in Hew Zealand in 1863 in the ship War Spirit. Mrs. Hogg was a daughter of Mr. J. Heldt, and had been residing at Auckland for about five years when her marriage to Mr. Hogg took place tn 1867. The ceremony was held in a cottage owned by Mrs. Heldt and situated in Queen Street, where the Premises of Messrs. Smith and Caughey now stand. The Rev. James "Oiler, the Methodist minister in Auckland at that time, performed the ceremony. Mr. and Mrs. Hogg settled in the Newmarket district, where Mr. Hogg acted for four years as toll collector tor the Provincial Government at the “U gates which then barred the way 'o Newmarket. He later carried on a grocery business on Broadway. He •erved on the Newmarket Road Board, end when the district became a municipality, he was a member of the first oorough council. He resigned this
office to become the town clerk, a position he held for 17 years. For most of that period he was also clerk to the One Tree Hill Road Board, the Epsom Road Board and the Manukau Water Supply Board. He remained with the One Tree Hill Road Board until recently, • when he resigned after 31 years’ service. Both Mr. and Mrs. Hogg have resided in Auckland practically the whole time since their arrival in New
Zealand. Wash all shelves where ants come with borax, washing: blue and turps. *. * * If a wall is damp and the paper is always coming’ loose, get a piece of twill sheeting, paste well, and stick it on to the wall. When dry, paper on top of this, and the whole will dry like cardboard. This will be found to be 'much better than pitch-paper. A dish of charcoal should stand in the larder all the year round. It will help to keep meat fresh and sweet. Renew the charcoal from time to time.
