DISTRICT CONFERENCE

FRANKLIN CHAMBERS MEET MANY REMITS PASSED (From Our Own Correspondent.) WAIUKU, To-day. A conference of delegates of the Chambers of Commerce of the Franklin district was held at Waiuku on Thursday last, when Mr. A. Duthie, president of the Waiuku Chamber of Commerce, presided. Delegates present were:—Messrs. F. A. Mosking, A. F. Brown, S. P. Day, H. Curd and Heerdegan, Pukekohe; McCall, Garlick, Rice, McDonald, Papakura; Hillary and Giles, Tuakc-u; A. M. Barriball, J. D. Chalmers and Father Taylor, Waiuku. Messrs. J. Deane, chairman Franklin Electric Power Board, and Mr. H. Wilcox, chairman of the Franklin County Council, were also present, and participted in the debates. The conference attracted considerable attention, and there was quite a large attendance of members of the various Chambers of Commerce, in addition to official delegates. In all 14 remits were dealt with, the following being the most important decisions. VARIOUS REMITS It was decided to recommend the chambers in the district to wholeheartedly support the Franklin court at the Auckland Winter Show, and that each chamber be asked to appoint representatives on the central committee, and also to assist financially in the matter. The Railway Department is to be urged to extend the duplication of lines to Pokeno as an urgent necessity, and that the work as far as Papakura be undertaken immediately. The condition of the Tuakau-Whan-garata-Pokeno Road was discussed at length, and in view of the information received from the county council representatives, the matter was deferred until next conference.

The combined chambers unanimously approved of the principle of the canal between the Manukau Harbour and the Waikato River, being of the opinion that it was necessary for the further development of the district. A remit expressing approval of the Government’s action regarding aliens and urging an inquiry into the conditions existing in Franklin as a result of the settlement of Asiatics in the distret was unanimously carried. The Government is to be urged to inquire further into the possibilities of rail cars, and also to proceed immediately with the electrification of stations and railway houses in the district. It was decided to ask the Post and Telegraph Department to improve the toll communications between Papakura and Auckland, the other centres expressing appreciation of the great improvements made in their district as the result of representations made six months ago. It was resolved that all chambers of commeice in the district should affiliate with the New Zealand Associated Chambers. The next meeting of delegates was fixed to be held in Papakura in October next. COMPLIMENTARY DINNER In the evening the Waiuku Chamber of Commerce entertained the visiting delegates, together with representatives of the Auckland Hospital Board, Franklin County Council, Papakura, Tuakau and Waiuku Town Boards, Pukekohe Borough Council and the Franklin Electric Power Board, at a complimentary dinner at the Kentish Hotel.
