MORE THAN DOUBLED
TAMAKFS CAPITAL VALUE ROAD BOARD REPORT “It is interesting to note that since our main roads were put down in bitumen in 1922 the capital value of the district has increased from £773,275 to £1,904,659,” said the chairman of the Tamaki Road Board, Mr. M. G. McArthur, yesterday, referring to the question of repairing the main St. Heliers Bay Road. He pointed out that repair work on both this road and the Kohimarama road was nearly completed, the latter being held up temporarily owing to the wet weather. In the president’s report, which will be presented at the annual meeting of the board on Tuesday, the present satisfactory financial state is pointed out. “It is now universally recognised that ratepayers should not be called upon to make good any damage caused by this class of traffic,” the report goes on, referring to the strain to which some of the roads have been subjected by heavy traffic in the past, and mentions the charges which have been made for heavy material carted over these roads.
Work on the waterfront roadway, the report also points out, is now well In hand, and provision for the amalgamation of Oraeki and Tamaki, as soon as the roadway is completed, has been made. It was stated also that a poll to de T cide the question of amalgamation of both Tamaki and Orakei with Auckland will be taken in the near future. It is expected that the actual date of the poll will be fixed in about a fortnight’s time.
