MISHAP TO LINER

FORTUNE IN PORT CHARGES NORTHUMBERLAND’S TROUBLES When the liner Northumberland struck an uncharted rock off the East Coast she was staging the prelude to one of the biggest jokes ever undertaken at the Calliope dock, Devonport. To make rom for the big freighter excavation costing £291 had to be carried out at the dock, and yesterday the Harbour Board, while agreeing to pay, itself, the extra cost of making the work permanent, decided to charge this sum against the owners of the ship. The secretary, Mr. H. B. Bennett, said the dock dues on the vessel, apart from the £391 for extensions, amounted to £3,255. The Chairman, Mr. H. R. Mackenzie: 1 see they charged them about £II,OOO at Gisborne. I think this board has treated them well.
