DEATH TOOK BOATMAN’S HAND FROM TILLER; BODY IN UNSTEERED LAUNCH
Press Association NELSON, Tuesday. The sudden death of Mr. John William Claridge, aged 55, a resident of Richmond, occurred to-day in unusual circumstances. Mr. Claridge was in his motorlaunch off Saxon’s Island, when, it would appear, he must have had a seizure. The launch was seen from the shore following an erratic course. Eventually it ran aground on a mudbank, with the engine still running. Investigators attracted by the launch’s movements found Mr. Claridge dead. An inquest was subsequently held at which a verdict of death from heart failure was returned.
