FRIGHTENED HORSE
BALK WITH GIG BOY’S LUCKY ESCAPE (From Our Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, To-day. This morning, while driving a horse attached to a gig, in Grey Street, Whangarei, a young lad named Burgess, employed in Mr. E. K. Plaisted's racing stables, met with a painful accident. The horse took fright and bolted toward the river embankment, and the lad while endeavouring to control the animal was pulled on to a shaft, there being no front board attached to the cart. In an endeavour to regain his seat he was thrown heavily to the road, injuring his knees and foot. The reins became entangled round his feet and he was dragged a short distance until he turned a complete somersault, after which he became free.
The horse careered down the street, over the embankment, through the scrub, finally pulling up among some mill logs at the water’s edge. The cart was badly smashed, but the horse escaped with hardly a scratch. The boy is receiving medical attention, and his injuries, though painful, are not serious.
