SAFE AT LAST
TUG’S ROUGH VOYAGE AWASH IN BIG SEAS ARRIVAL AT WANGANUI . (From Onr Own Correspond* nt.) WANGANUI, Wednesday. “Thank God we are here, safe | and sound. It is good to see a bit i of calm water around.” Such were the words of a cheery Scot, a member of the crew of the steam tug Kahanui, which has just reached New Zealand to the order of the Wanganui Harbour Board, after a protracted voyage. She is a fine little vessel, and is expected to justify her purchase. The trip was so rough at times that many of the crew were seasick and all agreed that the passage from Adelaide to Wanganui was the roughest they had ever experienced. During the voyage the ship was awash constantly, and it was impossible for the crew to walk on deck. The only exercise they had was walking on a raised portion sheltered from the weather, about four feet long. Asked as to the most trying ordeal of the trip, one man said:—“The passage through the Red Sea was ‘ murder.’ The heat was terrific at times and the men could scarcely breathe. In tact,” he added, “it was ‘hades with a full head of steam on.’ ” Two black cats were got rid of and canaries procured instead.
