THE AUCKLAND CARD

GREAT PROGRAMME FOR SATURDAY The Easter racing carnival opens on Saturday, and the Auckland Club’s programme for Ellerslie makes pleasant reading. There are seven events set down for decision, and some very thrilling struggles are confidently anticipated. The Easter Handicap and two classic events —the Oaks and Champagne Stakes—should resolve themselves into contests worthy of the occasion, but the four other races promise to be no less interesting. On Monday the St. Leger and Autumn Handicaps will attract the principal attention. The course is sure to be a bit on the soft side even if the weather remains fine. A review of 'Saturday’s card follows. GREAT NORTHERN OAK STAKES nCO Of TOOsovs.; 1& miles. •OCs This, the opening event on the programme, is going Barryander . to be a much better race than was at first anticipated, Macroom . . ' which is rather a good thing for all concerned. There Tinoifi . . . are eight that have made the final payment, and outLady Desmd’ standing among them are Lady Desmond, Phaola, FlyFlying Juliet ing Juliet and Macroom. Lady Desmond is a fine filly; Mervette . . she has won the Nelson and Rangitikei Cups, and Acushia . . . although fair fields opposed her she gave them a big start and a thrashing. The pair that read the most likely to carry the bulk of the investments are LADY DESMOND AND PHAOLA BRIGHTON HURDLES . Of 65050v5.; two miles. "j O o*7 The very fine field of 18 should ensure a thrilling Afci**# « contest over the tiring two miles, and fitness will play st. lb. a big part in thp result. That is why Sir Rosebery Si berr Rose " nl3 may not be as fancied as one would expect him to be on *. ll 4 his record, f6r he will probably require the outing. Mia Archibald . . 10 13 Bella has run some good races, but at a difference of Bv°Zi’ H five pounds Archibald is .preferred. Archibald won Feter Rosa . 10 ll this event last year, coming home an easy winner, Royal Form 10 3 and he is so fit that he may repeat the performance. Das W Throufib io o Royal Abbey has not been heard of for some time, and Llewellyn . . 10 0 reports from down the line credit him with being in Rangitahi . . 9 12 good fettle; which fact will make him a hard one to Maheofoire '9 0 beat. Wedding March will go well if started and Dead Sweet 9 0 Passin’ Through and Rangitahi will come in for heavy Glenotus ..90 support, and rightly so. Gold Rain and Day Bell read ''so the b est of the others. It is not an easy race to sum up, hut there are three that make a big appeal, and they are ARCHIBALD, PASSIN’ THROUGH and SIR ROSEBERRY GREAT NORTHERN CHAMPAGNE STAKES In*j Of 1,50050v5.; six furlongs. / This two-year-old classic promises to be on ft of the Silvermi best races on the whole programme, for there are only PaganeUi'". ! two of the cracks missing—Agrion and Paleta. There Covent Clartl. are Silvermine, a son of that game mare Silver Dink, Damaris .. . arM j a bo i d galloper; Paganelli, who showed pace at Exalted 13 ", ; Trentham, where he had plenty of room to work in; Melissa . . ! Coyent Garden, a line beginner and is now more In the Shade seasoned than when he won here .in the summer and • his two seconds at Trentham to good youngsters; Tea Lady ! Damaris, a stable mate of Covent Garden, with whom Cimabue . . . she will be coupled, is a splendid galloper, and will Colts and be we n su ited by the nice ruii home here; Melissa, a liHel 11 8 s 8 nicely bred filly, may not start, 'in the Shade is a possibility. Gascony, who has come on considerably since the summer, as witness his success in the North Island Challenge Stakes, in which lie carried a full penalty, to lead all the way to beat Lysander and Damaris- —the latter now meets Gascony on a stone worse terms, although the higher scale will suit the filly, who is pretty solidly built. The list is completed with Cimabue, the champion in the spring, and a youngster of whom the best has not yet been seen, has not been overdone, and looks exceedingly fit. To reduce the field to reasonable proportions a fancy is expressed for GASCONY, CIMABUE, and DAMARIS EASTER HANDICAP 21 —I Of S.OOOsovs.; one mile. • 1 I This is the big event of the day, and in keeping with s t. lb the occasion the field is rich in both quantity and Reremoana .10 2 quality. The race is such that it requires both sprintR a r>iw>rce* "i 4 ing ability in order to get a place early in the contest, Civility . 8 2 and the capacity to keep going at top pressure from Joy King . 712 the rise of the barrier right to the judge—in short, this Day CHi'-lrd’ 3 711 richly endowed race is nothing more nor less than a Transformer’ 7 S sprint all the way. Of course, Reremoana fills Master Doon 7 6 the bill in an ideal fashion, but there is the Orf£m Pitoh ’7 2 question of weight; on a nice dry track one could York Abbey ! 7 1 not get out of declaring straight out for the chestnut, Hipo .... 7 l an d yet in holding goings—which Is promised for SaturThe C Thorn S ’7 1 day—he will have to be a phenomenal horse to race and Quincoma . 7 0 win. Rapine may find the journey all too short, and Merry Jest ..70 the big field will not help him. More fancied will be Nancy 1 Lee* ' 7 o the stable’s other string, Joy King, whose second to Ring the Bel! 7 0 Reremoana at Trentham was suggestive of better things King Merv .70 to come, r ' here he has his opportunity. Royal Mosaic ! i ' 7 0 Divorce has struck form, and yet one cannot but think he is insufficiently seasoned for such a trying contest. Civility is one of the best gallopers In the country, and with the course in reasonably dry condition she will be one of those handy at the right end, for the eight furlongs is her best distance. A formidable pair is how one can with confidence designate the Lowry bracket, Oreum and Magna Charta, and the former will be racing over her own distance. High Pitch is nicely in, and is a real good one. Master Doon, Hipo, The Thorn, Le Choucas, Merry Jest, Papatu and Ring the Bell read best of the remainder. With the field analysed to a certain extent, it can be reduced to half a dozen horses: Reremoana, Civility, Joy King, High Pitch, Oreum and her mate, and The Thorn. Now the hardest part is left, to fine them down still further, but having only half a dozen to choose from makes the task apparently simpler, and then we have the following:—JOY KING, HIGH PITCH and REREMOANA MANGERE STEEPLECHASE 3 0 Of 500sovs.; 2i miles. •“ The smallest field is engaged in this jumping contest, st. lb. but a field of a dozen should certainly ensure a spirited w y ?' J ori S IJ, ,1 contest. Royal Form won twice at Paeroa in his first Prfnce Rufus 10 8 attempt in public over the big fences, and it wil! be Garzon ... 10 1 interesting to see how he handles the Ellerslie country u el ia a^ al k '' 1 2 o now, for before he went to win at Paeroa he displayed ¥om Moore ! 9 0 anything but a partiality for it. Wedding March will Bahadur ... .9 0 probably start here and may go well. Prince Rufus Syndicate . . 9 o likes this country, and will go all the better for his Waiau Lad 9 0 efforts last month. Garzon has been a useful sort over Peka Pal ..90 hurdles, and has no doubt shown something to justify being brought from Gisborne. Pentagram is one of the fittest horses at Ellerslie, and he will be difficult to head off. Gold Peak jumps hurdles well, despite her Whangarei mishaps, and she may go nicely There are one or two others down the list that can be classed as possibles, but it seems as if the best of the lot will be nearer the first half of the list. Three promising sorts are: PENTAGRAM, PRINCE RUFUS, and ROYAL FORM. ONSLOW STAKES HANDICAP Q CO Of 500sovs.; six furlongs. * l ' Quite a big field will be on hand to dispute supremacy st. lb. and it should be a very keen contest from barrier rise Thaw 83 I! I 111 to with the best beginners always in the picture. Auratu'm* ’ ! s 3 Melissa, if she is saddled here in preference to the GoL Wedding 8 2 babies’ classic, will count a lot of friends, for she is a TfTree. ;I 0 8;ood Tllaw may show that his Trentham form was Wild Pigeon 7 9 wrong, for he has been galloping in improved style K. Willonyx . 7 5 lately, although it is against him that he is not a Speechless *. 7 1 brilliant beginner. Auratum finds five furlongs quite The Fox ..71 far enough, if one can take a line on her previous r *bana . . 7 0 efforts, but as she is now more seasoned Desert Gold’s Whakarlte' ! 7 o daughter should be able to see out six furlongs. The Dansant 7 0 Brampton, a fair sort, will be coupled with the filly. ? n Wild Pigeon is a strong finisher, and she may be handy Zane Grey .70 at the finish if not too far back at the turn. Golden Thurnbell ..70 Wedding, Auriculus (if the going is bad), Arihana and Mosque ... 7 o Prince Otto are possibles Those to be considered are: Brampton ..70 MELISSA, AURATUM AND WILD PIGEON PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP 4 AO Of 65050v5.; 1J miles. This should provide a fitting termination to an ideal st. lb. programme, made up as it is by two classic races and St Hal? er 110 five handicap events. Star Stranger is undoubtedly a Hynanna .1 8 *9 brilliant performer, and yet he may find something furPegaway ..SB - ther down the list too good for him at the difference Alloway’ 'l 7 9 in tbe weights. Eden Hall, too, has a steady impost, Prin. Roniiie 7 6 and maybe Hynanna, a smart three-year-old, and one Mint Leaf . 7 3 who is apparently able to carry big weights, may Gold Cl Jacket 7 0 succeed in beating them both. Pegaway is more than Mosaic .... 7 0 useful, and furthermore does not belie the name. Barometer -.70 Alloway is a useful sort, and his fate in such good eomAuiomife” "7 0 pany will be of interest, for Aucklanders remember how Curraglimore* 7 0 he shaped here in the summer. Quincoma was a Lord star . 7 0 winner at Paeroa, and that disconcerting horse. Mint Muscarf 1 ? 7 o Leaf, cannot be overlooked. Ballackulish will go a good Namutere 7 o race. Gold Jacket, Barometer, Automne and CurraghStar Comet . 7 0 more are likely sorts. That concludes the review, and the hardest part is to narrow the field down to a trio, and here they are: I HYNANNA, PEGAWAY and EDEN HALL
