LECTURE ON CHINA

PAPAKURA W.E.A. A large and appreciative audience was present in the Btar Theatre sup-D** per room, Papakura, on Monday evert- * ing to hear Mr. L. A. Mander, M.A, lecture on the “Present Cr£ c sis in China.” Mr. C. S. Beechev presided, and briefly introduced the speaker. In opening his acU dress, Mr. Mander outlined the aims of the W.E.A. movement, and emphasised that, particularly at thepresent time, education was necessary to everyone. He pointed out that the* local branch of the W.E.A. would have" a library of chosen volumes at its dis- • posal to enable members to go as” deeply as they wished into the course of study which the class had decided' on for the coming session! In dealing with China as it was, and is, the lecturer said that such a big subject de manded much more time than was- at his disposal, but he would endeavour to pack his facts as closely as possible so as to cover as much ground as he could. He sketched the history of this gigantic country, and traced, the various causes leading up to .the present chaotic state of affairs; gave an outline of the difference* in religion, and in culture, between the East and West; pointed out the great poverty of a big proportion of the people: and emphasised the comparative lack of communications in so vast a country. These and many other interesting points were made by Mr. Mander, who was listened to with appreciative attention by the larg'* audience present.
