A PROTEST

TAKAPUNA TRANSPORT FARE THAT TWOPENNY PENAL RATE * “The Takapuna Perry Company wishes to make it clear that it has never at any time encoux-aged Mr. Smith to charge the penal rate of 2d, which, quite naturally, is being objected to by the travelling public,” declared Mr. St. Clair Brown, chairman of the company, to-day, commenting upon the North Shore traffic struggle.

Finding that Mr. Smith's bus service to Bayswater, on the lines suggested by the Transport Appeal Board, was unsatisfactory, relations with Mr. Smith have been broken off. The company’s own vehicles were placed on the road- yesterday. “On the contrary, the company has always been anxious that he should not charge the penal fare,” said Mr. Brown. “It has gone so far as to agree to waive the provisions of the Act in that regard. The company was anxious to continue to co-ordinate with Mr. Smith; and had offered to continue co-opera-tion with him on the basis of a reversion to the original tramway rate of fares. “Mr. Smith was unwilling—or what is more likely—was not allowed to modify his fares,” says Mr. Brown. “Therefore the company feels that Its duty to the public demands that it should reopen a full service at once at the old tramway rates.” It has already pointed out that a further saving can be effected by the purchase of season tickets.
