“CA’ CANNY”
PRESBYTERIANS IN DOUBT LABOUR MINISTER COMING Whether or not the Auckland Presbytery should allow itself to be influenced by the political leanings of a visiting Minister of the United Free Church of Scotland, caused considerable discussion at the Presbytery’s meeting last night. The Rev. James Barr, M.P., who is Labour member for Motherwell, Scotland, arrives in Auckland on July 25, and after a week here he wiil proceed on a five weeks’ tour of the Dominion, during which he will give a number of lectures. It was suggested that the Presbytery should welcome him at a dinner, but objection to this was raised on the grounds that the reverend gentleman might be lecturing in the cause of Labour. The Rev. Morrison Sutherland told the meeting that he understood the lectures would be on matters of historical interest, and on “Bobbie” Burns. It was finally decided to entertain the visitor, but exactly what form the welcome will take was left with the committee to decide.
