THE EASTER HOLIDAYS

ALL AUCKLAND PREPARES OUTDOOR ATTRACTIONS Should the climate smile with bright sunshine and blue skies during the next few days, Auckland young and old is assured of a happy and refreshing respite from the anxieties and cares of its business.' The holidays begin on Good Friday, and for most people they end on Easter Monday night. The bank holidays extend to Tuesday, and members of the legal profession are blessed with ten days’ vacation. Rotorua and the thermal districts of Wairakei will be the Mecca of hundreds of Aucklanders, while Russell and the North Auckland resorts are proving increasingly popular as they become better known. It is learned that Easter bookings are not as heavy as they were last year on account of the less settled weather. Railway excursion tickets are now available and will be issued until Easter Monday. They will be available for return until May 19. Railway traffic will be lighter this year unless a last-minute rush sets in. Bookings may be made a fortnight in advance, but so far the demand for seats is scarcely indicative of a “run on the bank.” There are the usual excursions on the harbour, and in this way the majority of Aucklanders will spend the holidays—if the weather is fine. Ellerslie racecourse will, of course, claim the patronage of thousands on Saturday next and on Easter Monday, when the Auckland Racing Club’s autumn meeting will be held. An unusual attraction in sports is promised in the New Zealand University tournament to be held on Saturday and Easter Monday, when the inter-’varsity athletic championships will be decided. There are to be boxing, rowing, tennis and other contests, and a public debate on the subject, “That the British Empire is in Danger of Disintegration,” should prove an interesting feature of the tournament. On Good Friday the various religious bodies will hold solemn service, to be followed on Easter Day by the festive celebrations of thanksgiving.
