EARLY GALLOPS
DOINGS AT ELLERSLIE INTERESTING TRACK WORK JUMPERS IN ACTION One or two heavy showers during the night did not improve the going at Ellerslie this morning, but nevertheless the course was in fine order when one takes into consideration the considerable rainfall. The going was not fast, although there were one or two good gallops, with nothing really outstanding. The course proper was open for fast work, and was largely availed of. The trestles were wide out, and the horses had to cover considerably more than the specified distance, the tryouts taking place about 30ft out from the rails. Wonder Star and Waitekohe set the ball rolling, running seven furlongs in 1.36 3-5, and both did it well. Lord Swift went half a mile in 54 3-5, and was going better than a companion. War Officer, looking none the worse for his exertions at Whangarei, finished strongly in front of Star Comet and Sleepy Sol at the end of seven furlongs, run in 1.36. Clarus was ahead of Town Guard at the end of six furlongs in 1.26, but both could have done better, particularly the latter. CHARLADY GALLOPS Charlady was better than Newbury and Corinax in a brush over six furlongs, and after running the first quarter in 27, the Whangarei winner held the advantage at the end in 1.23 2-5. There was not a great deal between Rina Maunga and Abbey Day in a spin from the six furlong peg, the pair taking 56 1-5 after cutting out the first furlong in good time. Serang, Gold Fern and Nassock were partnered over half a mile, running the distance in 53 1-5, the trio doing it comfortably. SMART TWO-YEAR-OLD $ A smart gallop was put up by a couple of youngsters when associated in a bout over half a mile. The Champagne Stakes candidate Silvermine was one of them, and he was most prominent, the colt having it on Arihana and the other pair at the end of four furlongs, the time being 50 2-5, which was a brilliant effort. Silvermine made many friends by his display. Baby Bun and Speechless were associated in a run over four furlongs, and there was not much between them at the finish, the time registered being 51 2-5. Baby Bun had the inside running and was being kicked out at the end. Speechless figures in the two-year-old handicap next Saturday. THE BEST SEVEN Nucleus was going better than Master Doon at the end of seven furlongs, which they cut out in 1.34 1-5, after running the initial quarter in 24 3-5, and the first half mile in 51 3-5. Nucleus was doing it nicely, while Master Doon, on the outside running, was inclined to run about. Modest Boy covered five furlongs, taking 1.7, and being too good for his companion. King Emerald, from a stand, took 14 2-5 to do the first furlong of a halfmile gallop, coming home in 53. A TRIO OVER FIVE Orazone, Cawnpore and White Bird jumped off from the five furlong peg, and registering 26 4-5 for the slow first quarter, finished in 1.7. The firstmentioned had the inside running and had it on Cawnpore at the finish, when the latter was being ridden. White Bird was further back not being hunted along over the last bit. White Bird may race at the Feilding meeting. TRIALS AFTER BREAKFAST There wejre several gallops on the course proper after breakfast. Archeno was asked to move over four furlongs in 55sec., Master Clements and The Dansant taking a second longer to cover the same distance. Lady Robinson, who got the best of the jump-off, finished on terms with Chamour, with Lomint a couple of lengths away, in a seven-furlong gallop, occupying 1.36 2-5. Alonsoo. and Rapoa strode over six furlongs in 1.24, Alonsoa not being bustled. Rahepoto, after jumping two hurdles, wound up in front of Tom Moor and Simplicitas in a six-furlong spin, taking 1.25 4-5. Merry Jest and Mint Leaf were not hurried to cover seven furlongs in 1.33 4-5, and Oration and Melissa dashed over four furlongs in 55sec. Awarere and Aussie, both looking well, left four furlongs behind in 56sec. OVER THE COUNTRY Dimlight (Chaplin), Gold Peak (Price), Pekapai (Olive), and Edifice (Moore) started over a round of the steeplechase course. The old water jump proved too much for Edifice, who toppled over, and Pekapai baulked at the same fence. Gold Peak was slow jumping the first fence on the hill and screwed badly at the next, allowing Dimlight, who gave a first-rate exhibition, to run home in fine style, after clearing the hurdle at the straight entrance, by a big margin. Dimlight was blowing hard at the conclusion of his task, but Gold Peak pulled up well and it was only her one mistake that allowed Dimlight to finish first. THE HURDLERS Over a schooling bout of four pony hurdles, Passionate, Scot Free and King of the Air were not asked to go fast and jumped carefully. Nothing better was seen in a course of the steeplechase fences on the flat than that accomplished by Beau Cavalier. In his two efforts over the fences he jumped splendidly and were it not for the fact that he touched the stone wall the second time his display would have been perfect. Archibald, who accomplished the same task, jumped in bold style. He promises to be heavily supported in the Brighton Hurdles. A FAST JUMPER Day Belx, Passin’ Through, and Sir Roseberry were associated in a fast run jumping task, clearing five hurdles on the course proper. Day Bell put up a performance very seldom seen at Ellerslie, for he was under a pull all the way and covered the distance in good time. Day bell is a most improved hurler, and should hold his own in coming events. Passin’ Through and Sir Roseberry fenced well, but could not keep pace with Day Bell. Over four hurdles on the course proper, the maiden Marita cleared away from Glen Light, Tall Timber and Blue Sky, and the manner in which he jumper gained him many friends for his Avondale engagement. The other three gave only a moderate display. LATEST ARRIVALS H. Neagle arrived this morning with High Pitch, Cimabue, and Welkne, and T. Daly with Hynanna and Tliurnbelle. Hynanna and Tliurnbelle claim engagements at the Easter meeting and will return after this fixture. Hipo arrived this morning from New Plymouth in order to fulfil his engagement in the Easter Handicap and other events at the Auckland and Avondale meetings.
