TAMAKI BRIDGE

PAPATOETOE PROTESTS A petition has been received by the Papatoetoe Town Board from over 10 business ratepayers trading in the town area, praying that the board protest against the proposed erection and allocation of cost of the proposed Tamaki Bridge, and that they convene a meeting of ratepayers to discuss the question.

The board decided to call a meeting for April 28. That the result of this meeting will be a strong protest is certain, as Papatoetoe has nothing to gain, but all to lose, by the erection of the proposed bridge, and the fact that they are being asked to help to foot the bill that will eventually take trade from their district, is sure to be a bone of contention among the business people and' ratepayers generally. Up to the present no definite allocation of cost can be made. This must eventually be done by the commission which will consider the question, but when residents are asked to contribute 10 per cent of a total of over £26,000, and

they consider the work a detriment to their community, the outcome of the discussion does not seem hard to forecast. The original idea was to provide a stock route from the Southern districts.
