COLOURED INVASION

TE AWAMUTU DISTURBED (From Our Oxen Correspondent.) TE AWAMUTU, To-day. For a number of years the small but thriving borough of Te Awamutu had the somewhat rare distinction among New Zealand towns of having all its fruit and sweets shops conducted by persons of British birth; there was not one under the control of any person of foreign or coloured nationality. Latterly, however, this, to most citizens, happy state of affairs, has changed, and there are now in the town two Chinese fruit stores and one Hindu fruit shop, while only last week a white fruiterer had to close liis business, no doubt having already felt the keener competition resulting from the advent of his Asiatic rivals. Neither is that all; a Hindu tailor and a Hindu bootmaker are now established in Te Awamutu in competition with their white rivals.
