The deputy-mayor, Mr. J. B. Tonar oresided. ’ 16 The mayor said that approximately e \ £26,000 had been raised for the first section of the main road concreting. The contract had been let to Messrs J. J. Craig, Limited, at £22,956 for this portion of the improvements, which would extend from the wharf to the war memorial. This sum did not include the £IOOO for tarsealing the shoulders. Concreting operations will commence very shortly and the other portion would then be started on. The main road would be kept open for traffic during the work, which lie anticipated would he finished by next September. Continuing, the mayor said that although the ratepayers had sanctioned the loan at 6 per cent., the money was being raised at 52 per cent., and was being taken as the council needed it. The mayor dealt at length with the water question and stated that the commission had that day visited the North Shore and had investigated the possible sources of supply. There was a doubt in his mind as to whether Northcote would have to abandon the Lake supply of water. It was imperative that the council should have some scheme in view. The question of drainage was also thoroughly gone into by the mayor. He stated that while the council was prepared to pay the amount of the compensations to the owners of the property in the vicinity they considered the awards rather severe. As it was it had not satisfied the property owners. In all matters concerning the drainage tanks the mayor had acted with the full approval of the Health Department. The mayor also stated that in his opinion it would not be a good policy to allow the water loan debentures to mature without full provision being made for their redemption. The meeting expressed confidence in the mayor and councillors.
