The clipper schooner Norval, Mackenzie, muster, l*-it for Auckland, on Monday last, 1 via the Friendly Islands. »She lakes with 1 e :r three passengers. , The regular trading schooner Energy* lef* 1 Auckland on the Bth of (September, arriving j at Tonga on the 16th, after a very line passage of eight days. After visiting several | of the friendly islands, she left Yavau on iiie sth inst., arriving hero on Monday « morning hist. The Energy has brought a very fair cargo of general cargo for this port, and three passengers. We have to thank Captain Savory for late files. The barque Helena arrived in port on Tuesday afternoon last, after a rather long 1 passage from the Line Islands, where she \ had been for the purpose of collecting labourers. The islanders about the Gilbert Group are reported to bo dying in great 1 numbers from starvation. Torrents of rain have fallen which has done more damage to the native food than the usual dry weather experienced there. A strange phenoraenan has been experienced by the Helena, in the shape of an entire change of currant. It appears that where the currant used to run at the rate of about thirty miles in the twenty-four hours to the westward, it now Hows with equal speed to the eastward. AV bile oil* the island of-'Tapiteuea (Drummond Island) the captain had occasion to send a boat on shore in charge of the chief mate, but after lying on and oif the whole night, and the boat not putting in an appearance, the captain went on shore and : found that the boat had loft the shore at about seven o’clock the previous evening. Every possible enquiry and search was * made, but nothing of the missing boat could be seen or hoard. A strong trade wind was < blowing at the time, and it is feared that ( the boat has been either swamped or capsized, for a boat which loft the shore a chort time previous to the missing one, ■ reached the vessel in safety. There were ■ throe white men and two natives in her at the time. During the passage of the _ Helena on here she had ten cases of measles on board, one of which, we believe, terminated fatally. The captain upon arrival in port reported the matter to the Gorman Consul, which resulted in the whole of the natives being transferred to the Susanae Godoffroy for eight days. The German barque AVandrham has hauled out into the stream preparatory to taking her departure. Wo understand she will leave for Hamburg in a few days, taking a full cargo of island produce from the firm of Messrs. Godoffroy and Bon. Messrs. Hugo. Ileclemann and Co.’s brigantine, Matautu, arrived in harbour on Thursday morning Inst, in ballast. She left Tongatubu on the 3rd inst., and Yavau on the 7th, arriving hero us above. The Casildu is now fust discharging her inward cargo and will soon he ready to load for home again. The schooner Vnvan sailed from here on tie* 7th inst,, for Matautu, Suvii, and returned yesterday with a cargo of cobra. Tim schooner Elizabeth took her departure for Tabula, on Thursday last with a general cargo.
