Wellington, September 2. i The second readings of the War Peni sions Amendment Bill and the Family j Allowance Amendment Bill were carried ! by the House of Representatives toi night. I The Postmaster-General, the Hon. F. | Jones, in moving the second reading, | said the Bill would restore pensions to I the former level and increase the eco- ; nomic pension to 255. The cost to the I Government this year would be £65,000 i for nine months, but next year it would j be £86,000. He referred to the increasj ing costs of war pensions and allowances to war pensioners and said the < cost of pensions this year would be I £1,584,C00, and in addition £70,095 spent j in medical treatment. Mr. Jones paid a tribute to the work jof the War Pensions Board. He said j the cost of the increase in economic penj sions was £33,000. The new pension for ; wives and widows would cost £19,000, I the increase to other dependents £6OOO, j and the war veterans' allowance exleni sion of the marriage period £7OOO. The j total would be £65,000. I Mr. H. G. Dickie (Opp.. Patea) apj proved of the Bill and made a plea for j those who could not attribute disability i to war service. ! The Minister of Pensions, the Hon. j W. E. Parry, moved the second reading lof the Family Allowance Amendment I Bill, the clauses of which lie explained.
