NEAR DISASTER.
South Taranaki Steamship Company's Inaha AT MERCY OF GREY RIVER. Press Association— Copyright. ' ' [: Gre'yniou'tb; 'August 30. A repetition of the Abel Tasman wreck was narrowly averted at 5.15 p.m. yesterday when a surge in the Grey River caused the snapping of one of the cables of the South Taranaki Steamship Company's 257-ton vessel Inaha. The vessel's screws, though not operating at the moment, were quickly set going and doubtless prevented her from being taken downstream by the five-knot current.
There were five other vessels at the wharf, all higher up than the Inaha, which was ranging a good deal in the abnormal conditions. Quick work was done in starting the engines and the vessel held her own, preventing any undue strain on the bow lines. Later the Inaha put into the stream and moved up to a berthage that was safer. She had not loaded any of the cargo of coal she is taking to New Plymouth.
