Prinsoner Strangles Himself At Timaru. REMANDED IN CUSTODY. Press Association —Copyright. Timaru, Juno 18. A cell at the Timaru police station was the scene of a tragedy shortly before 7.30 o'clock this morning when a man held on a charge of theft strangled himself with the aid of a towel and bedclothes. The victim was Joseph Owen Green, aged 26 years, an unemployed man who yesterday was before the court charged with stealing £2. Bail was allowed but Green was unable to find the surety of £SO and remained in custody. A constable looked in the cell early this morning and saw Green lying apparently asleep. He went back later to clean up and on going to rouse Green found him with the blankets over his head and his face buried in the pillow. A towel was found tied round his neck. drawn tight at the back. Green is believed to be a native of Gore.
