LEPER'S SWIM.

BID FOR FREEDOM FAILS. Darwin. June 17. How an aborgine named Jackie was arrested near Darwin on a charge of larceny, escaped, was re-arrested, and was discovered to be a leper, was told in the Police Court to-day, when Superintendent A. Stretton withdrew the charge and announced that the defendant had been sent to the leper hospital. Arrested last week because it was alleged he had stolen 5/- from an aged Chinese, Jackie jumped from the car while being brought to the police station. He was recaptured on Friday. Yesterday, while he was crossing the harbour to the leper hospital, he jumped overboard. After swimming until he was almost exhausted, he grasped a rope which a boatman threw him, anri eras taken to the hospital.
