It is Germany's earnest desire , i to conclude a true and final peace with I her neighbours and build in the west j a new Locarno." i The inquiries addressed to Herr HitI ler's Government by the British Govj eminent with a view to clarifying the former's proposals for negotiations for j peace on a new basis were mentioned at question time in the House of Commons yesterday. The Foreign Secretary said that no reply had yet been re- | ceived to a communication made by 1 the British Ambassador in Berlin on May 6. "On May 23 the British Ambassador j was instructed to remind the German I Government of the desire of His Ma- I jetty's Government to' receive a reply," j said Mr. Eden. "Sir Eric Phipps was | further asked to emphasise that His i | Majesty's Government was anxious to } I elucidate as scon as possible points i which were not clear in the German [ Government's memoranda of March 17, j ! 26 and 31 and that the purpose of His I Majesty's Government was to secure j ! that general negotiations should be j I opened for the conclusion of western I | and eastern European security arrange- j I ments and -the return of Germany to | the League with a view to a permanent j ' solution of the continuing situation | j created by the German Government's : action on March 7. i
