STRANGE THINGS IN EGYPT.
I And Stranger Stories In I British Press. HOW NEWS GROWS. Cairo, April 3. Stranger things happen in Egypt than we who live here realise, says a writer in a Cairo newspaper. In order to know what is really happening we have, to turn to the English papers, where we find that we have lived through "A Night of Terror in Cairo," while streets ran with blood, etc. We have almost become inured to these flights of journalistic fancy on the part of some of our distinguished journalistic visitors, but someone (unknown) won the prize this week with as extraordinary an exaggeration as we have ever encountered. Unfortunately it did not appear in print.
The headmaster of a Cairo school was rung up at midnight one day this week by a London newspaper and was asked whether it was true that his school omnibus, full of children, had been burned by students, both the bus and the children being "burned to the ground." We understand he said that it was not quite true.
The facts upon which the above rumour was founded are as follow: An Egyptian servant found a revolver lying in the street. He wandered into the garage where the English school bus is , kept and there decided to try the gun. / Taking the bus as a target, he fired a few shots, one of which hit the back, of the vehicle. Satisfied, he went on his way. Next clay, when the bus was being: cleaned, the bullet mark was noticed and. reported. News of this discovery wast spread aboard, • gathering weight as it: advanced, so that soon Cairo was hearing! fchat shots had been fired at the bus, that the bus had been ambushed, that a dasi turdly attempt had been made upon th.f: j British children therein, etc. How tb*e I burning story reached London we ct|o ! not know.
