TORNADO AND FLOODS IN U.S.A

Rising rivers to-day added the threat of widespread floods to the distress in the six southern States stricken yester- j day by tornadoes, which are now be.ieved to have claimed at least 500 lives. Already 450 bodies have been recovered ■md 1727 persons are known to be badly injured and many hundreds less seriously hurt. The damage is estimated at £5,000,000. Four inches of rainfall whicn overnight coursed through the Carolina foothills washed away bridges, flooded iighways and drove hundreds of persons from their homes. The American Red Cross announced that the tornado produced the third worst disaster on record in the United States. It will take ten years Cor the affected communities, which are not rich industrially, to recover from their economic losses.
