Declaring that it was in pity and not iii aimer that ho sentenced prisoner Mr Justice Smith, in the Supreme Court, Weflington, yesterday, imposed a. term ot i’our yoais rcioi illative detention upon Walter Bishop, aged 23, who admitted two charges ot arson when ho appeared in th' Magistrate’s Courts at Pahiat.ua and M a,Merton. The charges, said his Honour, referred to two farm houses. It war clear that tin prisoner had had a v ry ; hlifoilunate life and that he was sub--1 normal 1 '“I must treat you for purposes of tent once as a person who understands what he is. doing and who is responsible for his crimes within the meaning of the Crimes Act. ’ he said to prisoner. “I propose to sentence you to a long term so that your case may bo investigated and if you are a proper subject for a mental bos * pital you may be sent there. ’
