NOTIUM'S FORM IMPRESSES. SYDNEY WEEKI.J’S COM M ENT. In com'ment ’the general (otte of which is adverse and critical, on tho Taranaki Jockey (’lab’s recent meeting, and. on the classic event, the Taranaki Stakes, the New Zealand representative of the well-known Sydney sporting publication, “Referee,’’ makes the following observations in resjwict of Notium, the locally owned gelding which won the event. It was surprising to find Notium, tho only horse in the field with any protons’ons to class, only a mild second fancy, for, while lie had disappointed in some of Ills few outingS < he Certainly looked as if he had a royal chance in this. This opinion' was fully home out by the residt. Notium dropped hack into fourth place early and then ran round the field at the three furlongs to head Tonnorre into the home stretch, finally winning by a length and a half from tho favourite, while Brilliancy was running on in third place. The form was not good, and the winner’s effort could not- he termed exceptional, other than that he had to give the leaders about a four lengths break at the end of the first, furlong. Notium. is trained by J. Brown at Tlawera, this ixlhnlor also having prepared Link Divine and Whennaknra before they wore Sent to race in Arictoria. The gelding is owned by the Taranaki sportsmen, Messrs. E. L. Abbott and 11. B. Gibson, of Eltham, Die latter being well-known in connection with Ins good horse of a few years back, Rational.

Notium was purchased by his present owners as a yearling at the national sales at Trentham, 13. months ago, for 2CO gns., so that ho should not prove ■an expensive purchase-' for ho has now won two races and been placed in others. Notium is by Lysander (on of Absurd) from Makepeace (by Martian from The Hague).
