In the Davis Cup doubles at Eastbourne, Crawford and Quist (Australia) defeated Malfrey and Stedman (New Zealand), 6 —3, 4 —6, 6 —l, 6 —4. The weather was dull and cold and the attendance far below Saturday’s. The Australians’ unanswerable smashing from the New Zealanders’ uncertain lobs gave Australia a 4-M) lead in the first set. Quist’s smashing volleying enabled the Australians to easily win it.
Stedman’s driving and service improved in the second set. Crawford twice double-faulted and the New Zealanders ran a 4—3 lead. Maifroy held the service. The New r Zealanders deservedly wo* the set. Quist’s fierce smashing, plus the New Zealanders’ errors, gave the Australians the third set.
