FENTON STREET RAILWAY CROSSING

TRAFFIC HOLD-UPS MAY BE ELIMINATED

PROPOSED NEW STREET.

CONSIDERATION BY RAILWAY department.

The The Railway Board are at a BjM.pme which will permit of the elimination of the annoyance of frequent hold-ups of road traffic at the Fenton Street railway crossing

As is well realised connideftable annoyance is caused by streams of traffic being kept waiting for Joag periods at the crossing while shunting operations are in progress. For sonic time past the Stratford Chamber of Commerce have discussed a proposal under which Cloton Road would be extended to Broadway under the present railway bridge, and coming out at the site next the Empire Hotel, where the old Farmer’s Co-op. garage once stood. The Railway and Public Works engineers examined the proposal which was again thoroughly gone into this morning and it now under consideration.

It is stated that the scheme suggo ted would be carried out at reasonable cost and would be muck less expensive ban constructing a traffic sub-way in Fenton Street.

It would be easy to provide a fullwidth roadway of easy grade to Broadway by removing one of the piers of the railway bridge and extending tne span. No danger would be incurred from flood waters as the level of the roadway would be much higher than the point reached by the heaviest experienced in the river. The advantages of the scheme are obvious. Amongst other things itt would provide absolute (Sal/tjy fojr school children at all times as well as eliminating the delay occasioned pedestrians and other traffic as a result of shunting operations. It is expected that a definite official announcement will be made in the near future.
