Gueen Folk in Dunedin. The response of the public to .the appeals of the vendors on Poppy Day { s not always a coin or a polite refusal. The experiences of two ladies are, however, fortunately rare (says the "Otago Daily Times"). One lady in charge of a southern booth suddenly became avare of a man trying to remove the box. The elastic with which it was attaint! to th«- stall failed his first attsir.pt, and T ho lady had the presen -e ri mind to tiatlh to have then said that he 7/ould at. the box. The man was understood rather wring her neck than pay 1/for a poppy. The customary request of another vendor was nie.t with an pbrupt "Go to " from the male object of her plea. In the box of another collector was founi a halfpenny soldered over crudely to repreen,t a shilling.
