GHEE BUTTER

Market Opening in India GOVERNMENT~INTERESTED Auckland, November S. The possibilities of a market for ghee butter in India was again mentioned at. the meeting of <hc Auckland Chamber of Commerce this morning, when several let ters, including one from the Whnn garei Chamber of Commerce, were read.

The president, Mr A. G. Lunn, said the consumption of ghee butter in India was 750,000 tons, and if New Zealand could obtain a market to supply only 21 per cent of the total fconsurnptiou, it would moan a tremen (lon's benefit to the New Zealand farmers.

“f think that in our endeavours to impress upon the Government ithe necessity for investigating the Indian market, we should emphasise the dire straits (he dairy industry in New Zealand is in at present,. The Gov eminent. I think, is now' taking quite a keen interest in the matter.” Mr W, B. Darlow questioned whether the . objective aimed ,ap would bring about the benefit many believed. “Wo only export sufficient goods to pay for our imports,” said Mr Darlow. “What is the use of sending more goods if 't means that we will be importing more? It seems that what we want to do is to export mom, but you cannot do that without increasing imports. There is plenty of work to do' in New Zealand. There is. hardly a bridge in New Zealand that could not be improved.” Mr Hum: The position today is that we are facing the serious pro!) bin of over production. It is most important . We are not going to let' Britain down if she is short of butter, but I hope to see the farmer- getting 1/ n pound. Then wo would see plenty of smiling faces. It was decided to send the -correspondence to the Associated Chambers of Commerce.
