Harpooned Whale Damages
Cook Strait Launch SPARE BOMB EXPLODES Press Association—Copyright Blenheim, November 9. The Tory Channel whaling party today harpooned a huge right whale from the speed launch Cachelot. The animal sounded, but came un under the launch, throwing the craft high in the air and s+art ; ng a counle of planks, while ths shock exploded a spare bomb in the launch.
Mr. Joseph Perano. lender of the party, who was operating the harpoongun right over the bombs, was severely injured, a large part of his thigh and back muscles being torn away.
The harpoon line was hurriedly severed and the launch, in a sinking condition, made full speed L,r the beach, which it reached just in time. Mr. Perano was removed to the Picton Hospital, where he was operated on. His condition is serious but not grave. The other occupants of the launch are believed to have suffered minor injuries, but details are meagre.
