AUSTRALIAN ATHLETES

APPEARANCE IN WELLINGTON HIGH JUMP RECORD BROKEN Press Association. —CSnnyriebt. Wellington, March 11. In fine weather a special meeting on the occasion of the visit of the Australian athletes was held at the Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon before a large attendance. The only New Zealand record broken was in the high jump, Metcalfe clearing 6ft 4 7-Bin. He made four attempts to equal his own record of Oft Gin but failed narrowly in the third. Metcalfe' was below form in the broad jump per- ( fermances.

The times were affected by a strong northerly breeze. Both sprints were won convincingly by Hampson. In the mile Barwick was strongly challenged by Rafter towards the finish, but the former won by a comfortable margin. The results are:—

i 100 yards: T. E. Hampson (scr) 1, H. Smith Oiyds) 2, A. Welply (31) 3. Won by a foot. Time, 10 l-ss. 220 yards: Hampson (scr) 1, M. B. Furlong (9) 2, E. R. Chesterman (16) 3. Won fairly easily. Time, 21 4-ss. One mile: E. W. Barwick (scr) 1, T. A. Rafter (20) 2, W. Ogg (20) 3. Rafter led until 150 yards from the tape, when he was passed by Barwick with a strong finishing sprint, Barwick winning by four yards. Time, 4m 30 l-ss. High jump: J. P. Metcalfe (scr) 6ft 4 7-Bin 1, T. J. Crowe (sin) 6ft 4Jin 2, W. C. Clapham (llin) 6ft 2in 3. Broad jump: T. J. Crowe (Ift 6in) 22ft 9in 1, P. Phillips (2ft) 22ft sin 2, J. P. Metcalfe 'scr) 21ft llin 3. Hop, step and jump: H. Smith Oft) 48ft Sfin 1, L. Schneideman (2ft Gin) 47ft 9iin 2, J. W. Roberts (7ft 6in) 47ft 9in 3. The New Zealand two miles walk record of 14m 12 3-5 s was broken by 14 seconds by J. Driscoll, Napier, at the Caledonian sports held at Napier on Saturday. The previous record was established by A. Brady on April 15, 1896, at Auckland. Driscoll's time was 13m 58 3-ss. He covered the first half mile in 3m Bs, the mile in 6m 425, the mile and a half in 10m and the final half mile in 3m 30 3-ss.
